Materials & Construction
This is a heavy-duty liquid rubbing compound designed to cut through severe surface oxidation, restoring the original color and luster of faded gelcoat or paint.
Product Description
Why you'll want it
- Cuts through severe oxidation. This heavy-duty liquid is made to remove severe oxidation from gelcoat and paint, so dull, chalky surfaces can get their color and shine back.
- Use it by hand or with a buffer. Work it in with a clean cloth, or use an electric buffer. With a buffer, go easy on pressure so the surface does not burn.
- Made for boats, cars and RVs. It is designed for oxidized gelcoat and paint on boats, cars and RVs, so you can use it on more than your boat.
- Fall is the time to restore. Fall is a good time to work on the finish before the boat goes into winter storage, while you have the time to do it slowly.
What it is
Star brite Liquid Rubbing Compound for Heavy Duty Oxidation is a 16 oz bottle of liquid rubbing compound from the maker Star brite. A rubbing compound is abrasive, and the maker warns it can scratch gelcoat, metal and painted surfaces. The product's own text includes a California warning about chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.
How to use it
- Clean the area first with a boat wash to lift off dirt.
- Work a small dab of compound onto the spot with a spotless, dry rag.
- Rub in overlapping circles with firm pressure while the compound stays wet.
- Turn the cloth often so you do not put the removed oxidation back on the surface.
- Let it dry until a haze shows, then buff with a fresh cloth.
- Work in one small section at a time for an even result. Several rounds may be needed for a full restore.
- With an electric buffer, go easy on pressure, since too much can burn the surface.
- Once color and luster are back, finish with a polish from the same maker.
What else the job needs
Good to have on hand: a boat wash for the cleaning step, and a polish for a protective final coat. For lighter oxidation, the maker suggests trying its fiberglass color restorer and sealer first, since it is much less abrasive.
