Materials & Construction
Star brite Rust Eater & Converter Spray is a chemical rust treatment that converts existing rust into a stable, paintable surface while its biodegradable formula helps prevent further rusting without harming the underlying metal.
Product Description
Why you'll want it
- Removes rust and leaves a paintable base. It removes rust and leaves a stable surface that is ready for paint. You can paint over the treated area once the rust has converted.
- Helps keep rust from coming back. The biodegradable formula is meant to prevent further rusting without harming the original metal underneath.
- Made for many kinds of metal. It is designed for tools, vehicles, boats and other metal surfaces that need rust treatment before painting.
- A good fall job before winter storage. Fall is a good time to treat rust on boat metal and tools before winter storage, so that work is done ahead of spring.
What it is
Star brite Rust Eater and Converter Spray is a 22 oz spray from the maker Star brite. It is a rust converter, a product that changes rust into a stable, paintable surface. The record describes its formula as biodegradable.
How to use it
- Check that the surface is free of oil, grease, loose rust and flaking paint. If any are there, use a degreaser and light sanding or wire brushing first.
- Coat the surface by spraying, brushing or dipping. Use it at temperatures above 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 C) for good results.
- If you will paint, let the treated surface dry thoroughly for 2 hours. Then apply oil based, urethane or epoxy paint.
- If you will not paint, apply it directly and let it work for 1 to 2 minutes. Rinse the treated area with fresh water, towel dry, then apply an appropriate protective oil.
- If you used a sprayer, pump clean water through it for about 1 minute before storing.
What else the job needs
Good to have on hand: a degreaser and sanding or wire brushing tools for prep, as the directions mention. Pairs well with an appropriate protective oil and the paint you choose, such as oil based, urethane or epoxy.
